The term Poterie d'Accolay refers to the production of a community of potters established in the village of Accolay, in the Yonne department. Accolay pottery history began in 1945 when the company was created by four former students of Alexandre Kostanda, led by André Boutaud, followed by Louis Dangon, Slavic Paley and Raude. Later, the decorators Raphaël Giarrusso, Georges Pelletier and the sculptor Pierre Merlier each marked this period with their artistic personality. Initially making buttons, their big break came with an order for 300 buttons for Christian Dior's New Look collection, launching their success. The ceramics are of great artistic research both in the decorations (all original) and in the forms: pots, wall plates, lamps, masks. The success was such that in the years 1958-1960 the ceramics employed around sixty people and opened several showrooms on major roads: on the RN6 in Vermenton, Arcy sur Cure and Appoigny, on the RN7 in Pouilly sur Loire, on the road from Dijon to Fixin.
The workshop closed in 1989, but their unique, often rustic, designs remain sought-after by collectors.
